AR is a narrow domain, i.e. you're given an environment and a situation that you cannot change, but you'd like to overlay information on top. 

It is better to have a HUD display in combat jets than to have to look down. 

On a fundamental level, it is a compromise. You simply cannot argue that transparency in UI is desirable on its own. You can argue that overlays and HUDs are desirable, given X/Y/Z constraints because having nothing would be worse.
