For those that have read my first book you will know all about my knowledge of Freemasonry; this is why coming to Tomar was of particular interest and importance to me.

On our second day here we were taken to the Church of Santa Maria do Olival in Tomar, by an incredibly kind and very humble member of staff that we met at the hotel, who used to be a tour guide. While we were chatting, he offered to show us a few places in town and said there was something inside the church that hardly anyone ever talks about.

He led us into a side chapel and pointed to a glass display case, inside it was a human skull. He told us it was very important!

The skull belongs to Gualdim Pais.

There’s no big sign, no dramatic spotlight, just a simple case in a quiet part of the church. Most visitors walk right past it, focusing on the tomb slab nearby, unaware that they’re a few feet away from what’s believed to be the actual remains of one of the most important men in Portuguese history.

Gualdim Pais was born in 1118. He fought in the Crusades and later became Master of the Knights Templar. In 1190, when he was over seventy years old, he led the defence of Tomar against a massive Almohad siege and won. That victory helped secure the region for the Christian kingdom.

He died in 1195 and was buried in this church, which he founded as a burial place for Templar knights. His tomb slab is still mounted on the wall, but the skull goes mostly unnoticed.

He’s also allegedly the founder of the entire city of Tomar. Not just the fortress and the convent, but the actual town itself. According to legend, he was helped by angels and when you look at how everything lines up - the symbolism, the geometry etc, it makes sense why that story has lasted.

But somehow, the skull of the man behind all of that is just sitting there in plain view and no one talks about it. It’s strange. It’s important and it’s completely overlooked.
