Juan Pablo Montoya presents new theory amid Max Verstappen to Mercedes talk:

— Former F1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya speculated that Max Verstappen might have already signed with Mercedes after a rumored meeting with Toto Wolff in Sardinia. Montoya shared his thoughts on W Radio Colombia's MontoyAS podcast:

“Max meeting with Toto was probably to sign. For Max, to even reach that point in the conversation, means everything has already been seen, discussed, and decided.”

“You know what I mean — it's the final step. Like, 'Okay, I want us to work together, let's do it, sign here, let's go.' I'm sure they wanted to sign face-to-face. They're not going to send the first contract and do it all remotely. So I think that could be what's happening.”

— Current Mercedes driver George Russell reignited the rumors by mentioning "ongoing" talks between Verstappen and Mercedes, which he claimed were affecting his own contract negotiations. Neither Wolff nor Verstappen have dismissed these claims.

— Speculation intensified when yacht and jet trackers suggested a meeting between Verstappen and Wolff in Sardinia after the British Grand Prix, where Verstappen finished fifth. However, it remains unclear if such a meeting occurred or was merely coincidental.

— Verstappen is under contract with Red Bull until the end of 2028, but a performance-related exit clause could allow him to leave if he falls outside the top four in the Drivers' Championship after the Hungarian Grand Prix. With only Belgium remaining before Hungary, Red Bull appears secure, as Charles Leclerc, currently fifth, trails Verstappen by XX points.

— Red Bull senior advisor Helmut Marko appeared unfazed by the rumors, stating:

“Max can meet with whoever he wants. We have a valid contract and we assume that Max will stay with us.”
