I wish this had occured to me on air today to share:

Johnny Carson, in 1992, after XX years of hosting The Tonight Show on NBC, said goodbye in the most humble & grateful way.

NBC kicked him to the road. They’d watched Jay Leno & his managers plant stories in the papers about his demise & his being “out of touch”. They didn’t back him up or call it out.

They allowed him to be mocked mercilessly in the SNL “Carsenio” sketch (it IS funny, but cruel), & all while he was still making tens of millions for the network.

The network brass passed over Letterman, whom Carson adored, & went w/ Leno, who Carson initially tolerated, & then despised once the depths of Leno’s “efforts” to get the gig were known. Leno famously never thanked Carson on his first show. People never forgot that.

Did he spew obscenities at NBC in interviews? Nope. Did he pound his fist on the desk in bitterness or anger? Nope. He signed off with dignity, class, & gratefulness - all while he easily could have snapped back & at all those plunging the knives in his back, & also his front.

We live in different times, & I’m younger by a decade than Colbert, & was way younger than Carson - but when you get told it isn’t your time anymore, for whatever reason, you keep moving along, & let your class & craftsmanship speak for itself.

The show isn’t about the host - it’s about the audience & them giving you their support & time. What we saw last night from Colbert was only about himself, & it will get worse.

AND, this reaction is exactly what Trump delights in. Trump’s maddest when he’s ignored, because he knows the voters see people like Colbert as elites they can’t relate to. The last election defined that gap between Hollywood & regular America.
