J.B. Pritzker (D) signed an executive order directing state agencies to evaluate the impact of President Donald Trump’s tariffs and their potential economic impact on consumers. With the signing, Pritzker joined other Democratic-led states in fighting back against Trump’s tariffs. “Donald Trump’s reckless trade policies are nothing more than a tax on working families that will jack up prices, threaten jobs, and impact the way we live,” Pritzker said in a statement. “This Executive Order ensures we have a clear-eyed view of the impact the Trump Slump will cause from higher prices at the grocery store to uncertainty in our farms and factories. We’re working with other states to stand up for working people and protect our economies when we can.” The order directs state agencies to assess multiple economic impacts, including stabilizing food assistance programs, preparing for medical supply chain disruptions and identifying business vulnerabilities and workforce disruptions. The move adds Pritzker to a list of Democratic governors who have taken action against the sweeping tariffs, which have caused confusion and panic since Trump took office in January. Trump has repeatedly paused implementing the tariffs, but the administrations recently set August X as a “hard deadline” for them to go into effect. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick earlier this month said that smaller countries would have a baseline rate of 10%, while others like Canada could be taxed at 35%. “Nothing stops countries from talking to us after August 1, but they’re going to start paying the tariffs on August 1,” Lutnick said. In May, Washington Gov. Bob Ferguson (D) led an effort to block Trump’s tariffs by filing an amicus brief supporting a multistate lawsuit against the effort. (AP Photo/Nam Y.
