In a post on Truth Social on Sunday, Trump said, "The Washington 'Whatever’s' should IMMEDIATELY change their name back to the Washington Redskins Football Team.” He added that if the team doesn’t comply, “I won’t make a deal for them to build a Stadium in Washington.” Trump also demanded that the Cleveland Guardians revert to being called the Indians. The Commanders and Guardians changed their names in 2020 and 2021, respectively, after years of criticism that the monikers were offensive and racist towards Indigenous people. It isn’t clear what means that Trump has to stop the Commanders' stadium. Congress gave the city control over the land for the proposed development last December. D.C.'s city council is now in the development phase of the project. President Donald Trump is calling on the Washington Commanders to revert to their former name, threatening to scuttle plans for a new stadium in Washington, D.C., if that doesn't happen.
