The only successful Communist state was San Marino from 1945-57, which had an elected communist government which somehow failed to murder anyone (unique among marxist states).

San Marino is an itsy-bitsy nation surrounded by Italy.

When the San Marino communists publicly APPROVED of the brutal suppression in Hungary 1956, they lost their majority.

They pulled shenanigans to prevent a new election and an armed revolt started brewing. Then they saw reason and stepped down with no casualties.

So they didn’t kill anyone, but liked it when other communists did so. They left office, but tried unconstitutionally prevent it. 

So they were still communists.
