The startup tech companies have investments from VCs who are taking the risk so as to get a ROI years down the road through a sale or public offering of the company. Thus they have a red to make a profit soon and therefore hire the best talent ( and pay top dollars) to get to profitability. Can the WNBA also do that? Can they sell equity in the league to VCs to pump money in that could then be used to pay these athletes? Maybe but the NBA is already investing in them every year so I am not sure how additional investments can help. Secondly in tech startups, if the company cannot scale or make money, it’s shutdown. Does the WNBA also work on that principle? In which case you pay top dollars to athletes but if in five years or so you do not show results ( either profit or increased cash flow) and continue to bleed money, WNBA would need to shutdown.
