The Royal Niger Company, which had been granted a royal charter in 1886 to oversee trade and govern territories around the Niger River, ceded its administrative rights to the British Crown in 1899 for the sum of £865,000. This transfer marked the beginning of direct British colonial rule in what would become Nigeria. As a result, the Protectorate of Northern Nigeria and the Protectorate of Southern Nigeria were officially established on January 1, 1900, under British control. These territories joined the Colony of Lagos (which had been annexed earlier in 1861) to form the key components of British presence in the territory. By 1901, both protectorates were formally incorporated into the British Empire and placed under the administration of the British Colonial Office, signifying full colonial status. Then, in 1914, under the leadership of Sir Frederick Lugard, the British amalgamated the Colony and Protectorate of Southern Nigeria with the Protectorate of Northern Nigeria into a single political entity known as the Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria. This event, commonly referred to as “The Amalgamation of 1914” was driven largely by administrative convenience and economic considerations, particularly the British aim to use revenue surpluses from the region with surplus to subsidize the one with less, and to streamline governance across the vast and diverse territory.
