What are you most disappointing historical realisations?

Mine were:

• Correct pronunciation of ancient Latin (Caesar, Cicero, Veni, vidi, vici etc.)

• east Roman soldiers not looking like classical soldiers into the Middle Ages 

• Samnites didn’t call themselves Samnites
