1963: Levison "leaves" the CPUSA, because they don't love blacks enough. Supposedly. But at the same time, MLK is arranging meetings with AG Bobby. Bobby tells MLK to his face to avoid Levison because he's a known Commie. MLK "did not bat an eyelash." FBI's informant inside CPUSA records Levison later boasting that MLK staying cool when Bobby said this proved that MLK acts "like a true Marxist-Leninist."

It does sound like suspicious timing. I don't believe Levison truly "left" the CPUSA. This indicates deeper espionage. Soviet moles in CIA or FBI or the WH knew the FBI had pegged Levison as CPUSA. They knew in order for MLK to climb the political ladder higher and get meetings with Bobby and JFK, it would require Levison to pretend to distance himself from CPUSA. So who was the Soviet mole? I bet they never did figure that one out.
