Why did Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar resign — and what happens now?

Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s sudden resignation has triggered a rare mid-term vacancy in India’s 2nd-highest constitutional office.

Only X other Vice-Presidents in India’s history — V V Giri and R Venkataraman — have resigned before completing their term, both to contest the Presidential election. Dhankhar’s case is different.

There is no provision for an acting Vice-President in the Constitution.
