Sonchafa and Sontakka, the twin fragrant blessings of the monsoon season. One has the hue of gold, the other whispers of silvery moonlight, but both bless the world with their ethereal fragrance.

These days I gather these blossoms from my garden every morning for my Pooja, not as a dull routine, but as a quiet ritual that connects me to my roots. Our home in Goa had both these flowers when I was growing up, and the fragrance takes me back to those days.

The golden ones are the Swarna Champa or Magnolia champaca, considered to be the favourite of Shri Vishnu and Devi Lakshmi. Its fragrance is deep, heady, almost meditative. In some temples, it is still woven into garlands only for the Gods.

The white sontakka is known as the white ginger lily, or Hedychium coronarium. It grows where there is pure water and soft sunlight. In Ayurveda, it is known to cleanse the air and calm the mind. I discovered that the flowers and buds are edible. Also, if you submerge a sontakka flower in a glass of water for a few minutes and drink that water, it freshens the palate with its sweet fragrance.

Because the flower is white, it is often offered to Lord Shiva in Shravan, an apt flower for the Adi Yogi, a symbol of stillness, of fragrance without flamboyance.

These are not just flowers. They are memory, medicine, and mantra combined. In a world flooded with strong artificial fragrances, these sacred blooms remind me of a simple, yet timeless truth—what is sacred does not need to scream.

It merely needs to bloom.
