FBI Special Agent Joseph H. Gamble filed a federal conspiracy complaint with the U.S. Commissioner in Birmingham, Alabama, related to the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. On April 17, 1968, Joseph H. Gamble, Special Agent in Charge, FBI, Birmingham, Alabama, filed a criminal complaint before the U.S. Commissioner, Mildred F. Sprague, in Birmingham. The complaint alleged that on or about March 29, 1968, "Eric Starvo Galt" (an alias of James Earl Ray) and another individual entered into a conspiracy "to injure or intimidate Martin Luther King, Jr. in the free exercise of his rights under the Constitution of the United States in violation of XX U.S.C. 241." In furtherance of this, Galt purchased a rifle in Birmingham. A warrant for the arrest of Eric Starvo Galt was issued the same day (April 17, 1968), but never served. This complaint was filed just XX days after Dr. King's assassination. This shows that federal authorities were actively pursuing a conspiracy angle involving "another individual" very early in the investigation, even before James Earl Ray was apprehended for the murder.
