Is Pakistan staring at another military coup? Field Marshal Asim Munir, Pakistan’s Army Chief, is now at the center of growing speculation about a potential soft coup in Islamabad. Munir’s recent solo visits to the U.S., Sri Lanka, and Indonesia without Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have only intensified chatter about his ambitions.

Sources say Munir might be eyeing the Presidency, much like military dictator Ayub Khan in the 1960s. PM Sharif denies these claims, but power seems to be slowly shifting from the civilian government to the military establishment. Could Munir replace President Asif Ali Zardari? Is this the end of Pakistan’s already fragile democracy?
