Tom Cruise Finally Gets His Oscar – And Dolly Parton Does Too

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has officially announced the recipients of its 2025 Honorary Oscars — and two Hollywood legends are finally getting their golden statues: Tom Cruise and Dolly Parton.

A Long-Overdue Recognition for Cruise
After decades of redefining action cinema and redefining the meaning of "movie star," Tom Cruise will receive an Honorary Academy Award this November. Known for performing many of his own death-defying stunts and passionately championing the theatrical experience, Cruise’s award recognizes his lifetime contributions to cinema — a career that spans from Top Gun and Rain Man to Jerry Maguire and the Mission: Impossible franchise.

Academy President Janet Yang praised Cruise’s impact, calling him an inspiration for his “incredible commitment to our filmmaking community, to the theatrical experience, and to the stunts community.”

This recognition comes just months after Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning: Part Two (2025) helped power a record-setting Memorial Day weekend box office.

Dolly Parton Named Humanitarian Oscar Recipient
Joining Cruise, Dolly Parton will receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, which also comes with an Oscar statuette. Parton’s extensive philanthropic work, from her Imagination Library literacy program to disaster relief and vaccine development donations, has made her one of the most beloved public figures in and outside of entertainment.

Other Honorees
Rounding out this year’s slate are:

Debbie Allen, the multihyphenate artist (actor, director, producer, choreographer) celebrated for her trailblazing work in film and television.

Wynn Thomas, the acclaimed production designer behind films such as Do the Right Thing, Hidden Figures, and A Beautiful Mind.

Academy’s Statement
“These are four legendary individuals whose extraordinary careers and commitment to our filmmaking community continue to leave a lasting impact,” said Yang in the Academy’s official statement.

When Will They Be Honored?
Cruise, Parton, Allen, and Thomas will receive their Oscars at the 2025 Governors Awards, scheduled for November in Los Angeles. The event serves as a lead-up to the main Academy Awards ceremony in March.

After years of being passed over despite a legendary career and multiple nominations, Cruise will finally hear the words so many have expected for decades: Tom Cruise, Oscar winner.
