The general perception seemed to be that the Nazis meant to kill people and it was just an unintentional byproduct of Communist policies. I never really agreed with that. But it’s also why I always believed it would be easier for Communists gain power somewhere like America relative to Nazis. Now with watching people try to mainstream and normalize Nazism (on the right) again and Communists being increasingly popularized (on the left), it’s obvious that both threats are increasingly real. It’s true that latter has far more institutional support, but some of the biggest voices on the right have been promoting or completely turned a blind eye to open promotion of national socialism. It started with trying to rewrite history but has gone far beyond that now. And I think a lot of the people who know better but going along in hopes that the moment passes don’t understand how hard it will be to put that genie back in the bottle.
