@chicagotribune Chicago’s flirting with video gambling machines in bars and airports to boost tax revenue? Bold move, but let’s talk facts. Ald. William Hall’s push for citywide slots could bring in millions, with estimates of XXXXX terminals generating serious cash flow. Ald. Gilbert Villegas’ airport-only plan might rake in $116.8M annually from XXX machines at O’Hare and Midway, tapping into travelers’ boredom. But here’s the rub: Mayor Johnson’s team says the payout’s “meager” and could cannibalize the city’s shiny new casino revenue. A study from Chief Financial Officer Jill Jaworski pegs citywide gambling revenue at a measly $10M a year—hardly a jackpot when you consider the social costs.

Legalizing video gambling could help struggling neighborhood bars, but let’s not kid ourselves: those “sweepstakes” machines already fleecing grandmas at gas stations need to go first. Illinois has over XXXXXX legal terminals statewide, pulling in $478M in taxes in 2019 alone—Chicago’s missing out. Yet, the risk of saturating the market and hurting Bally’s casino deal looms large. Springfield’s got to rework the tax split to make this worth it, or we’re just shuffling deck chairs on a sinking budget ship.

President Trump’s results-driven approach would’ve had these numbers crunched and a deal done by now—fast, no nonsense. Chicago deserves revenue solutions that don’t prey on the vulnerable or prop up black-market slot parlors. Let’s get smart, not desperate. #ChicagoGambling #TaxRevenue #VideoSlotschicagotribune.comchicago.suntimes.comyogonet.com
