Very hard to estimate given how much the figures are goosed by government spending and fake productivity, but the point is that unless gold production is able to keep up with economic growth then it's value will rise disproportionate to wages. That said, Americans are clearly less wealthy now than previously, and the decline goes beyond purchasing power and into things like community stability and social trust.
