Honestly seeing how cheap it is, it would absolutely make sense to set up some minimal rare earths processing in Europe, even if it needs to be subsidised. We could then ramp it up if needed.
On the other hand, we’ve seen monstrous failures of industrial policy in Europe in the last decades, most notably in Germany. Which leads me to genuinely doubt the capacity of our technocrats to navigate the storms ahead with a „decent-enough“ level of success… And I fear I’m one of the more optimistic ones in that regard.
