Emma and her husband are utter warriors for British farming and protecting our arable land and food security

"I was recently invited to Hertfordshire by a visionary estate exploring renewable energy as part of its future. My role was to outline the potential impacts of solar schemes on tenant farmers and communities, and the consequences of using our most productive farmland for non-agricultural purposes. This visit came just as new research from CPRE ➡️‼️The countryside charity revealed that over XX% of solar schemes in England are being built on the country’s best farmland — with even more in the planning pipeline‼️⬅️

Across the UK, solar projects are being approved at an alarming rate on best farmland. Planning policy lacks clarity, with ad hoc decisions up and down the country and recent policy shift favours large schemes at the expense of farming, food and communities.

Too often developments overlook how land is currently used, its value to the community, its role in producing food, and its history. Planning isn't and shouldn’t be just about mega-watts. It's about people, place, and purpose. But increasingly planners seem to disregard these issues.

The increasing pressure to put solar panels on all rooftops is the right direction. CPRE recommend a target for at least XX% of solar energy to come from rooftop solar, car parks and brownfield land, together with a more strategic use of our land.

However, there is no doubt that solar schemes can offer a positive diversification for owner occupiers, it can bring immediate financial reward, they can continue to farm the land if they wish and the land will be returned to them at the end of the development.

The absolute opposite is true for tenant farmers! Solar can spell immediate financial disaster, resulting in a permanent loss with little by way of compensation. The government’s new Solar Roadmap does at least acknowledge this problem, stating that compensation for tenant farmers must be “fair and adequate.” However, it remains unclear how this will be assessed.

Our own case in Old Malton has, I hope, helped demonstrate to landowners and Estate Managers that with goodwill, vision, and compromise, there is a better way. We must ensure that tenant farmers who manage so much of our land are able to benefit from, not be punished by, the transition to renewable energy.
