Newly declassified FBI chronology reveals Dr. King’s sweeping plan to shut down D.C. with poor people, mule carts, and tent cities.

The “Washington Spring Project” was designed to jam the nation’s capital with protests until Congress passed a $20B anti-poverty bill.

King planned to bus in thousands, including anti-war activists, and build a “City of Hope” shantytown near the Capitol.

Officials feared it would spiral into chaos. 

The FBI flagged National Guard limitations, and Speaker McCormack ordered police to block demonstrators “by any force necessary.”
