I should start out with "it's not worth it". Based on a few calculations, the ROI is between 15-20 years...and those numbers were based on my non-professional crap install where I built mounts out of 2x4s and 4x4s and propped them up in my yard without asking permission. That being said, it might become worth it and have a better ROI if they keep jacking power rates...plus there's a somewhat intangible value to being able to run lights, my coffee pot, an ice machine, and a bunch of other things when the grid's down. Including tools, panels, inverters, and a few bad purchases, I think I spent around $20k.
