I saw a new paper has been published claiming that nor’easters have become stronger in recent decades due to man-made global warming. I have not read it yet because I am traveling, but right off the bat this doesn’t sound right.

First, extratropical / mid-latitude cyclones (which nor’easters are a subset of) should weaken with warming due to “Arctic amplification,” which reduces the latitudinal temperature gradient (baroclinicity) required for their formation.

Second, we know from old U.S. Weather Bureau weather maps and numerous detailed handwritten historical accounts that the worst nor’easters on record generally occurred in the 18th century, 19th century and 1960s.
