There is a very valid and well-documented reason why many advocated for retiring names like "Redskins"—the term is widely recognized as a racial slur against Native Americans, and Native groups and civil rights advocates had pushed for the change for decades because of the harm and offense these names caused.

Big sponsors, legal actions, and growing public pressure led teams to review and ultimately drop names many saw as perpetuating racial stereotypes, with organizations like the Washington team explicitly stating their intent to make a clean break and not tie their new identity to Native imagery out of respect for those concerns.
