Saint of the Day: St. Lawrence of Brindisi

St. Lawrence of Brindisi, born Giulio Cesare Russo in 1559 in Brindisi, Italy, was a Capuchin friar, priest, and Doctor of the Church known for his preaching, scholarship, and missionary zeal. Orphaned at a young age, he joined the Capuchin Franciscans at 16, taking the name Lawrence. He studied theology, philosophy, and languages, mastering Hebrew, Greek, and several modern languages, which aided his biblical scholarship and preaching.
Ordained in 1582, Lawrence became a renowned preacher, traveling across Europe to evangelize Catholics, Protestants, and Jews. His sermons were eloquent and rooted in Scripture, earning him the title “Apostolic Doctor.” He served as a military chaplain, notably during the Battle of Székesfehérvár in 1601, where he inspired Christian troops against the Ottoman Turks, carrying only a crucifix. As a Capuchin leader, he founded monasteries and served as vicar general, emphasizing poverty and prayer. Lawrence also wrote extensively, including works on Mariology and apologetics against Lutheranism. He died in 1619 in Lisbon while on a diplomatic mission. Canonized in 1881 and declared a Doctor of the Church in 1959, St. Lawrence is celebrated for his intellect, courage, and devotion to spreading the Gospel.

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle.
Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil;
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
And do thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host,
By the power of God, thrust into hell Satan and all evil spirits
Who wander through the world for the ruin of souls. Amen.
