So now you now know what XCM is. But how do those intentions travel between blockchains? @Polkadot has the transport protocols for that. The Transport Stack: HRMP, XCMP and VMP • HRMP: Horizontal Relay-routed Message Passing is the current default. It routes messages via Polkadot’s relay chain, making it reliable but not yet fully scalable. • XCMP: The future p2p protocol, enabling direct parachain-to-parachain communication without involving the relay chain. • VMP – Vertical Message Passing is used for parachain to relay chain messages (e.g., staking or governance commands from a parachain to the relay). So while XCM defines what a message means, HRMP or XCMP defines how it gets there. You can say XCM is the email, XCMP/HRMP are the postmen. Because of XCM you can; • send tokens from one parachain to another, even across consensus boundaries. • use XCM to initiate and track the command if you want to execute a contract or stake tokens from another chain • participate in a network’s governance from a different parachain interface. XCM supports branching logic, permission checks, even NFTs. This allows Polkadot to act not as one big blockchain, but as a network of sovereign chains, each contributing unique services while still interoperating seamlessly. XCM is not just a feature, it’s the foundation of Polkadot’s vision for a scalable, decentralized, multichain future. It allows web3 apps to transcend siloed chains. As XCMP rolls out and bridges expand, XCM will be the universal grammar of the blockchain internet.
