HW3 vehicles are currently limited to running FSD v12.6, while newer hardware like HW4 and AI4 are on v13+—so HW3 cars are falling behind on the latest Full Self-Driving features.

Elon Musk has confirmed that Tesla will provide a free hardware upgrade to HW3 owners who purchased the Full Self-Driving package, but there’s no official timeline yet—the upgrade will roll out once Tesla has finalized what specs the “completed” FSD system will require, to avoid needing another retrofit down the line.

In the meantime, HW3 cars still get updates and are expected to remain eligible for Robotaxi use, though the driving experience is a bit less smooth and you won’t get all the new neural net magic just yet.
