You are right, the darker tone has worked for DC for decades... but lets take a look at what movies  those have been ((checks notes)) Ah yes... Batman movies. 

Superman isn't a dark character and shouldn't be handled as such. 

James Gunn has stated he doesn't want a Campy Batman in the DCU and he wants him darker and grittier. I don't expect him to be like Pattinson's version (I hope to God it isn't) But I expect it to be a darker and grittier than Superman. 

Just as Clayface is going to be very much tonally different than Superman. 

This isn't the MCU 2.0.... This is going to be different than what Marvel has done and even what was being done with the DCEU... and it needs to be.
