Heyy again Somniacs 🤗

In my morning tweet, I mentioned that July wasn’t impossible for the mainnet. Just a few minutes after tweeting, I saw Paul’s tweet from yesterday, and yes, I’m now convinced the mainnet won’t launch in July.

In his tweet, Paul mentioned that they made some changes to the gas model and these changes caused more unexpected issues than they anticipated. As you know, the Somnia team has previously talked about their gas model goals.

To briefly explain their goals:

1/ They aim for a high throughput chain.
That means a chain that can process many more transactions per second (TPS).

2/ They target low gas fees (almost zero).

Before the mainnet launch, they are trying to integrate new solutions to minimize transaction costs. This could include:

▫️Gasless transactions (sponsored transactions)
▫️Fee abstraction (using other tokens instead of gas tokens)
▫️Native compression methods similar to layer-2 solutions like Optimistic Rollup or zk Rollup.

🧩 Critical detail

While such gas model changes may seem positive for users (free transactions), for app developers they require:
▫️Additional code overhead
▫️New SDK updates
▫️Reconfiguration in the transaction execution flow

That’s why Paul said, “it caused more problems than we expected.”

High TPS, low gas… the dreams are beautiful, but it seems like the dev table is a bit messy right now.
