The word 'Cowrie' comes from the Swahili word 'Kauri' meaning ceramic/porcelain. Historically, cowries were most abundant in the Indian Ocean, where the Swahili Coast happens to lie. The cowries have been used for many centuries as a form of payment in many regions of the world.
