Historic Police Protest Shuts Down Force Headquarters in Abuja

Today marks a watershed moment in the fight for dignity, justice, and equity for serving and retired police officers in Nigeria. In an unprecedented and courageous action, we successfully marched on the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters in Abuja to demand better working conditions for serving personnel and a dignified pension structure for retired officers.

When we first announced, alongside both active and retired officers, that we would take this bold step, few believed it was possible. But today, Nigerians, young and old, stood united in doing what many thought was unimaginable: peacefully shutting down the Police Force Headquarters.

Despite calculated efforts by the police hierarchy to intimidate and isolate uniformed officers from participating, their joy and solidarity were unmistakable. Many marched with us, even while assigned to “monitor” the protest, smiling and nodding in silent support. What began as a modest assembly of retired officers at the gates of the National Assembly quickly transformed into a full-fledged national protest that caught the leadership of the force off guard.

In a desperate move, a plain-clothed officer even stole my Ray-Ban AI glasses during the protest. But their petty antics could not derail the resolve of our leaders and participants. All attempts to disrupt or sabotage the movement—including a failed attempt to bribe protesters with drinks at the Force Headquarters—were roundly rejected.

Let it be clear: the spirit of this movement is unbreakable. We witnessed firsthand the power of unity, discipline, and purpose. The message delivered today was loud and clear: the era of silence and submission is over.

We express our deepest appreciation to the retired officers who traveled from across Nigeria to make today a success. Special gratitude goes to the super-talented Bello Glandachi, also known as Dan Bello @BelloGaladanchi , whose tireless, multilingual advocacy and organizational brilliance were instrumental in coordinating today’s turnout. We also salute the members of the Take It Back Movement in Abuja and across Nigeria who organized and protested, as well as those in jurisdictions beyond Abuja.

As announced, retired police officers will continue to maintain a visible presence in Abuja, and the next phase of nationwide protests is scheduled to resume on August 1, 2025.

This is only the beginning.
