XX. In 1904, Joseph F. Smith issued the Second Manifesto, banning polygamy (again). Unlike the first manifesto, this one led to many excommunications. The crackdown split the church and triggered the rise of Mormon fundamentalism. Smith, however, continued to practice polygamy.
