The MCU in 2012 to 2019 was an unstoppable force, so many films made billions, even Thor the dark world made nearly the same as Man of Steel. 

The first ever teaser trailer for Man of Steel premiered in front of The Dark Knight Rises which made XXX Billion. Nolan isn’t just producer, he was also a co writer on the story. They marketed his involvement heavily.
