Because I’ve met Chinese students in Europe who can quote Voltaire but stumble through their grandfather’s village dialect. I’ve Chinese friends in Toronto who speak perfect English, fluent shame, and broken Mandarin. And I’ve read Chinese authors who write entire essays mourning the loss of memory, language, and lineage. So maybe this isn’t just a "Vietnamese" problem. Maybe it’s a colonial problem. And maybe you’ve just trained yourself not to see it. When I say no Asian child should grow up thinking Paris is civilization or that their own history began with Europe, I’m not flattening us into a monolith. I’m pointing to a shared wound that shows up in different ways, depending on who conquered you and how much of your past they buried. If that doesn’t apply to you, good. But don’t pretend it never applied to anyone who looks like you. The fact that you think it’s irrelevant just means someone did a very good job convincing you the damage never happened. I’m not here to speak for all Asians. I’m here to refuse silence where the damage is real.
