The concept of the Ben-Gurion Canal project, which would cut through the Dead Sea and Negev Desert from the Gulf of Aqaba to the Eastern Mediterranean Sea, was initially proposed in 1963, following the Suez Crisis of 1956. The event saw Britain, France and Israel invade Egypt due to President Gamal Abdel Nasser’s decision to nationalize the Suez Canal. Nasser himself was a staunch supporter of Palestinian freedom and a Pan-Arab socialist with close ties to the Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc. Before then, the canal had been under the control of a British-French enterprise called the Suez Canal Company, giving Western multinationals major leverage over the Red Sea trade route. The 1936 Anglo-Egyptian Treaty had also reaffirmed British control over the Canal Zone, while Egypt retained only nominal sovereignty until its nationalization. According to historical data, the Suez Canal is responsible for 12-15% of global trade and in 2022-2023, Egypt, which is now a member of BRICS and the Belt & Road Initiative, saw toll revenues of a record $XXX billion (nearly X% of their GDP) as per the World Bank. The Egyptian government collects all of the toll revenue generated, on top of the benefits it brings to the local economy on the border region of the Sinai Peninsula. The Ben-Gurion Canal would reduce shipping times by up to 20%, which would take away Egypt’s monopoly over the shortest trade route between Europe and Asia and completely shift leverage to Israel and the West. According to a declassified 1963 memo from the U.S. Department of Energy, nuclear explosives are suggested for potential excavation which would explain Israel’s genocidal bombing campaigns in Gaza. Another way in which Gaza could be severely affected has to do with the impact on water resources. Gaza is already facing a severe water crisis with limited access to clean and safe drinking water, which would be further exacerbated by the diversion of water from the Mediterranean Sea. This all has to do with Lenin’s fourth feature of imperialism that he defined in his well-known work Imperialism, the Highest Stage of Capitalism, which involves the formation of global financial cartels which have a purpose of controlling industries and regions across national borders. This would then translate into establishing a monopoly over trade routes as a means of securing dominance over global markets.
