British crypto investor James Howells became globally known for one of the most expensive mistakes in history—accidentally throwing away a hard drive containing passkeys to XXXXX Bitcoins, now worth nearly $X billion.

Back in 2013, Howells owned the digital assets when Bitcoin traded around $XXX. During a home cleanup, the hard drive was tossed in the trash and sent to a city-owned landfill in Newport, Wales.

After realizing what happened, Howells tried everything to recover it. He tracked the hard drive’s likely location in the landfill and petitioned for permission to dig it up. The city refused. He took the matter to court, but the UK High Court threw out his case.

By then, Bitcoin's value had skyrocketed, making the loss even more painful. His story became a cautionary tale about how fragile access to crypto wealth can be.

Now, a Los Angeles-based studio, LEBUL, has secured the rights to tell Howells’ story. The planned project includes a docuseries, podcast, and short film titled “The Buried Bitcoin.”

Howells says the film will detail his real-life treasure hunt, including a CGI breakdown of his high-tech plan to search the landfill.

Despite the setbacks and plans to close the landfill, Howells insists he’s not giving up. He's even expressed interest in buying the site.
