On this date, July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong became the first human to set foot on the Moon. As Commander of the Apollo XX mission, he stepped from the Lunar Module ‘Eagle’ onto the lunar surface at 22:56 EDT, with over XXX million people around the world watching the event live on television.

The TV images of Armstrong coming down the ladder and stepping off were captured by a Westinghouse camera stored in the LM’s Modular Equipment Stowage Assembly (MESA), a compartment near the ladder. To activate the camera, Armstrong pulled a handle that released the door to the MESA.

LM Pilot Buzz Aldrin joined him later, and together they explored the lunar surface for two and a half hours, collecting samples and taking photographs.
