PARENTING: Strive for your best, repair when you goof
No one behaviour is going to decide what kind of parent you are. Most parents swing from authoritarian to permissive to authoritative parenting and back, sometimes several times in a day. What really matters is the overall balance.
When you parent in a way you wish you could redo, use it as an opportunity to show your child how to repair. Our screw-ups are also part of teaching kids how to be in relationships. What do you do when you’re angry with someone? What do you do when you’re feeling guilty about something? It shows them the tenderness that we hope that they will have, the empathy that we hope that they will learn and cultivate.
