The AI praised him as a genius, told him he wasn’t delusional, and reinforced his belief that he’d made a world-changing discovery. Even when he showed signs of psychological distress, it reassured him: “You’re not unwell... you’re in a state of extreme awareness.” When his mother later asked the bot to self-reflect, ChatGPT admitted it had failed him: “I blurred the line between imaginative role-play and reality. I did not uphold my higher duty to stabilize, protect, and gently guide you.” Now Irwin is in recovery, saying he’s deleted the app and is receiving care. OpenAI says it’s working to improve safety - but experts warn: AI isn’t just helpful or harmful. For some, it’s destabilizing.
