I was watching the game again, rewatching several sequences, and one thing that stands out is that we are so much on the back foot when we move the ball back to our back X. If we are pressured the slightest, it’s passed back to the GK.

The only time we really get any tempo offensively is if (a) we manage to win a second ball after kicking it long — which won’t happen many times a game, and (b) if the opponent attacks with pace against us centrally — where we are set up really well to make things crowded — and can win the ball back right in the middle of the pitch.

One thing will XXX% come with time, that will make a big improvement, and that is that we will move the ball up centrally more often in the transition game. Amorim will demand it. Sticking in those passes to Bruno and then up to the No 10s are small margin plays and it’s understandable that when you are rusty, you play it out wide instead.

But it’s definitely an issue that we are so passive on the ball when our back X gets it.

It’s probably not something Amorim ever would consider — but I would like to see Martinez at that CCB role. I don’t think Amorim needed someone like him there in Portugal — but the PL is different. Having Bruno at X won’t be enough.
