Italian scientists recently created a rare state called a "supersolid" using *light*—this means they engineered light, in combination with matter in a special semiconductor, to behave both like a solid (with an ordered structure) and like a superfluid, rather than literally freezing "pure light" into a traditional solid.

This breakthrough was accomplished by creating hybrid particles called *polaritons* (a mix of light and matter), which then formed a supersolid structure under laboratory conditions—so while it's not "solid light" in the conventional sense, it is a real, unprecedented state that blurs the lines between light and solid matter.
