spread is (y)   the spread is an option premium to own corporates versus equity - I arbitrarily but reasonably use the SP500 as the equity to the credit of AA.   this says you are not being adequately rewarded to own credit unless SP500 were to rally XX% and drop risk pricing.  now risk price indicates SP XXX to drop XX% or so.
