This dangerous escalation prompted the Trump administration, which has good relations with both Ankara and Jerusalem to push the two sides towards direct talks on the security level and Azerbaijan was chosen to be the appropriate host given its close relations with both sides. Indeed, Turkish and Israeli intelligence officials held several meetings in which understandings were reached that reduced tensions between the two countries and also eased the situation in Syria. In this context, the Turkish side proposed a direct meeting between Israeli officials and officials of the new Syrian administration in Baku to reach understandings that would de-escalate the situation.
