layer 2s that integrate with @EspressoSys do so to outsource sequencing rights and confirmations. 

these l2s can range from app-specific blockchains to fully programmable smart contract platforms, like evm rollups.

in this setup, each l2 operates as a rollup:
=they receive a pre-ordered list of transactions
=execute them off-chain in a deterministic virtual machine
=then post periodic state updates to the layer X

depending on the type of rollup, these updates come with either,
= a validity proof ZK-rollups
or
= a fraud proof window, optimistic rollups.
