California’s $83B donor-state surplus is real, but Newsom’s tax withholding threat is pure political theater. The state doesn’t pay federal taxes—its citizens do. Threatening to intercept IRS payments would violate federal law, as Treasury Secretary Bessent warned.

This isn’t about fairness; it’s a desperate stunt to distract from Sacramento’s own failures. If D.C. cuts funding, California’s real problem is decades of mismanagement, not federal accountability.

Taxpayers deserve better than this circus.
