Why do so many people still trust Sam Altman?

At OpenAI, he has been known as a notorious liar for years.

His behavior was so awful that the board fired him in November 2023.

However, within a few days, he forced his reinstatement as CEO. Shortly thereafter, he fired the board members responsible for his dismissal. 

By the way: 
To this day, Sam Altman remains stubbornly silent about the details of this power struggle, often referred to as the "Board Saga." 
During a podcast appearance with Lex Fridman in 2024, he merely melodramatically hinted that he has been deeply disappointed and that this has been the worst experience of his life.
