in 2002 there was no "struggling" because if you only look at the part of wirecard in 2002 that later became what we know as wirecard they had a very strong Position within a business that was huge & growing.
card not present business in Germany was more or less not existing. 
with that merger with Surefire/Optimal in 2002 it was a global player with a license to print money - but with the problem that they could not openly talk about the source of that money...
