That’s Cyprus. The island is divided into two parts: the Republic of Cyprus in the south (Greek Cypriot) and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in the north. The south is internationally recognized and part of the EU. The north declared independence in 1983 but only Turkey recognizes it. The split began in 1974 when Turkey invaded following a Greek-backed coup aiming to unite Cyprus with Greece. The division is physical too. There’s a UN buffer zone between the two, and peace talks have stalled for decades. Now Erdogan is calling for the world to accept “the realities on the island” and back a two-state solution, urging more global ties with Northern Cyprus. He says Turkish Cypriots have faced “decades of injustice” and their isolation must end.
