Those escorts were Americans with security clearances, but many didn’t even understand the tech they were supposed to monitor. A ProPublica investigation exposed the whole thing, calling out how little oversight or expertise was actually in place. The Pentagon flipped out. Secretary Hegseth slammed it: “Foreign engineers - from any country, including of course China - should NEVER be allowed to maintain or access DoD systems.” Microsoft is now backpedaling, promising China-based engineers are out of all U.S. military cloud work. For a company with a $X trillion market cap, it’s wild that “maybe don’t let China work on Pentagon servers” had to be explained.
